My photo
I am an artist who has lived in Los Angeles, New York City and, now, northern California. My initial interest in art was provoked by the Asian collection at the Seattle Art Museum when I was in high school, and it has continued to this day. I am not a collector, merely an admirer who has picked up the odd scroll, print or seal. Seals especially have engaged a deep involvement and I welcome this opportunity to share. For my own primarily sculptural works please visit my website lorenmadsen.com.

This seal is a fake. Chen Hong Shou was a famous seal engraver who lived 1768-1822. According to the date inscribed on the seal (
wu zi, 1768, 1828, etc) the seal would have to have been engraved when Mr. Chen was still an infant. When I pointed this out to the seller he said that "we see eye to eye." I bought it anyway on the principle that, as in the West, many copies were by way of practice or homage, though this seal could have been made strictly for gain. More than one Chinese collector, though, restricted himself to the accumulation of copies.
